Mid-Atlantic Formation Clinic


  • 2019 Mooney Caravan Mid-Atlantic Formation Clinic – Hickory, NC (KHKY) – June 14 - 16, 2019
The Mid-Atlantic Formation Clinic will be held in Hickory, NC (KHKY) on June 14-16, 2019 under the direction of our new Mid-Atlantic Wing Lead, Kevin “KP” Paul.

Clinic Goals:  This clinic is intended for the purpose of qualifying Mooney pilots who are new to formation flying and who intend to fly with the 2019 Mooney Caravan to Oshkosh. All pilots must attend a formation clinic to meet the annual formation and/or proficiency training requirement to qualify to fly with the Mooney Caravan.  Please note that pilots who are registered for the caravan will have priority.
  • Caravan qualification: Mooney 2 ship, intro and basic proficiency (newbie)
  • Mooney 2-3 ship, recurrent training/proficiency.
Experienced and/or Carded formation pilots will be paired with new pilots to serve as safety pilots.

Lodging: Special arrangements have been made with the Crowne Plaza, Hickory (an IHG Hotel) for a rate of $97/night.  Online reservations for your choice of King or two Double room can be made here
Please book your stay at the Crowne Plaza to help us with airport transportation. If you have to book a room elsewhere, be sure to let us know.

Ground Transportation:  You fly in and we will get you back and forth on the ground. Anyone with a personal or rental car available would be appreciated and pressed into service.

Clinic Fee:  $125. This clinic fee includes:
  • Clinic T-Shirt
  • Lunch on Friday and Saturday
  • Dinner on Friday and Saturday
  • Transportation for the weekend
  • Tips for ground and transportation crews
  • Clinic overhead

Non-flying companion price: $50 includes a clinic T-shirt, group lunches, group dinners, and transportation. 

Registration:  Click here to register no later than Tuesday, May 14, 2019. Please register early so that we have enough Observer/Safety Pilots are available for the clinic. Volunteer pilots will be coming at their own expense from several states as remote to HKY as New York and Mississippi. We need time to organize how many are required. Our goal is to get everyone who registers qualified to fly with the 2019 Mooney Caravan!

Homework: Important items will be reviewed at the Basic Formation Ground School on Friday morning, but you need to have read the Guide(s) so that the information presented at the briefing will be familiar to you.

Preliminary Schedule:

Friday, June 14th
  • Breakfast at Hotel
  • 09:00 – 10:00 Sign in at the FBO Briefing room.
  • 10:00 – 12:00 Ground School lead by Adam "Sled" Carney – REQUIRED for both new and experienced participants. 
  • 10:00 – 12:00 Safety pilot training session led by Kevin "KP" Paul. 
  • 12:00 – 13:00 Lunch provided at FBO. 
  • 13:00 – 15:00 Demo flight: Experienced pilots flying formation and new pilots riding right seat.
  • 15:00 – 17:00 First flights by new pilots with safety pilots coaching from right seat with briefings and debriefings. 
  • 18:00 – 20:00 Group dinner catered by Crosswinds Cafe. 
Saturday, June 15th
  • Breakfast at Hotel
  • 08:00 – 17:00 Training flights with briefings and debriefings. 
  • 18:00 – 20:00 Group dinner catered by Crosswinds Cafe. 
Sunday, June 16th
  • Breakfast at Hotel
  • 08:00 – Make-up flights (as needed). 
  • 10:00 – Mass Formation Flight with briefing and debriefing. 
  • Departures.
